It's happening. It's really happening! After almost 4 years, we are finally starting to work on the house!!
I've been waiting for this since we put in the offer. Those of you who have seen our main floor, or at the very least glimpsed it's ugliness in the background of my photos, will understand how excited I am. The black marble linoleum in the living room and dirty beige, pock mark filled with black gunk, shrinking seam, nails sticking up in the middle of the room, linoleum that fills my kitchen and hallway are on their way out too. The wainscoting with the missing piece that the previous owner replaced and never stained and was therefore used by our cat for a scratching post is being yanked out, as is the rest of it along only one other wall in the room. So are the valanceless, dusty, dusty rose vertical blinds and the greasy horizontals over the sink. The mismatched 70's meet the 80's kitchen/living room/dining room/hallway are getting a make over!
The most exciting part...I'm finally getting COLOUR!!! I don't know why, but I've always wanted red. Rich, inviting, cozy, red walls. I've come to terms with the fact that my tiny house cannot handle a room full of red walls and they make taking nice pictures a challenge anyways (see my NYE pictures), so I've settled (and convinced Keith) that the dividing wall will do. I also think the cupboards will be refinished in red, til we can afford to replace them but that will have to wait til I can sand and paint outside this summer. The other walls are going to be redone in a warmer, richer beige than the industrial tan that is slathered all over the rest of the house.
We also bought beautiful, dark hardwood floors that will go in throughout.
So, yesterday we went to Canadian tire to pick out some paint chips. What do you think?
The big square on the right is called "Blood Red" and matches the red chairs we bought at IKEA almost perfectly. I wish it had a better colour name than "Blood Red", but what can I do? The one at the very top is almost the same and since it isn't a Debbie Travis colour, it's probably cheaper, but I would bet it won't cover as well. Debbie Travis paints also come in $6 mini pots that you can try out on your walls before you commit to a big can. I think I'll have to try that. I 'll also be heading to Home Depot to see what they have.
Let's see what else is new....Friday night we went out to Sydney's favourite restaurant (Boston Pizza) for "Bug Pasta" for her, chicken nuggets for Cameron and a Thai Chicken Pizza for us. I don't know if you've seen their commercials, but we actually (for once) weren't the parents with the crazy kids, longingly gazing at all the other people quietly enjoying their meals. They ate all their food, no one asked to go the bathroom mid meal, nothing was spilled, and no one was crying. The lady next to us actually congratulated me on my well behaved children as we were leaving! What?? What did you say? I'm sorry, I don't think I heard you correctly!
Saturday we had an afternoon of Birthday parties. Sydney went to the movies, Cameron went bowling and Sydney joined back up with us for pizza and cake. We rented movies and flaked out on the couch that evening. Sunday we did some cleaning up and out and then headed to the pool for a swim. Every time we go I am blown away by how far Sydney has come in the past 8 months or so since she last took lessons. She was actually being held back for third time in her level since she really would not/could no do much of anything. She didn't want to put her face in the water, she couldn't float and WOULD NOT jump without holding on to someones hands. Now she is launching, and I do mean LAUNCHING herself in to the water, in the deep end, unassisted and swimming back to the wall with a little help. She's trying to learn how to dive now. It's too bad she doesn't have a little more fat on her to help her float because I think she'd actually be swimming if she did. I'm not sure where they will place her when she can go back to lessons!
Anyhoo...here is one picture of a quiet moment the kids took this weekend.
